Why Continue My Education?

There are many reasons that students should consider continuing their education beyond high school. It is important that students and families understand the options for postsecondary (after high school) education in the United  States, as well as the benefits of continuing education beyond high school in order to make informed decisions about their educational choices.

What Is an Academic Degree?

A degree signifies that a student has met the requirements necessary to complete a program of study.

An associate degree usually requires two years of full-time study and can be earned at a community college. Associate degree programs usually are equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree program.

A bachelor’s degree is an undergraduate degree that requires approximately four years of full-time study. It is required for some professions and for licensure in certain fields. It also is required for admission to advanced degree programs such as law and medicine.

A master’s degree is awarded to students who continue their education beyond a bachelor’s degree. It usually takes between one and three years to complete a master’s degree.

A doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., etc.) is the most advanced degree. It can take between 3 and 7 years to complete a doctoral degree. A bachelor’s degree and sometimes a master’s degree are required of students who want to earn a doctoral degree.

Academic Programs

Community college (or junior college) is a two-year postsecondary institution that offers academic  programs suited to a  particular community.  Community and junior colleges offer associate degree programs.

A four-year college or university is a postsecondary institution where students may earn a bachelor’s degree. Many four-year colleges and universities offer programs for students to earn master’s and doctoral degrees as well.

Vocational Programs

Vocational or trade schools teach specific skills for a particular job or profession. They are not focused on general education. Careers include cosmetology, culinary arts, mechanics, and tech-related fields.

Apprenticeships allow students to train for many technical careers. Apprentices earn lower wages while learning “on the job” from skilled workers in a specific trade. It takes approximately four years to complete an apprenticeship. Sample careers include electrician, plumber, and carpenter.

The Military

Military academies allow students to earn a bachelor’s degree for little or no cost. Upon graduation, students are commissioned officers and must serve some years in their respective military branch.

Enlisting in the military. Students may enlist in the military directly after high school. Enlisted personnel may be able to take classes and earn money for future education pursuits during their time of service.
